Animals In Progress... Arena Rex Beasties !!!

Nero WIP - Arena Rex

Hello,

Today a simple and quick article about 2 WIPs concerning animals for Arena Rex : Nero, the Bull and Caho-Ta, the Horse !

Nero is a big — full of steroids I mean — Bull (or an Auroch ?) that can be mounted by Septimus.
In the game Arena Rex, he will be a character by himself, being played alone or with Septimus...

Hello,

Here is the art for Nero and Septimus from Red Republic Games :

I wasn't sure about the size and volume of Nero compared to Septimus, so I did suggest several other possibilities and we agreed with Nick about this final one, with a more impressive Nero :

Now, concerning Caho-Ta...
He is a Horse and is mounted by Hroka.
And as for Nero and Septimus, I suggested to change the size and volume of the animal...

A Big Frog, The Toad ??... Na ! A Big Weaponized Not So Nice Fellow, I Say !

The Toad - Infamy Miniatures
Hello to Everyone,

I hope you did enjoy my last articles about Otho, and all the pictures that were there.
I still have several projects for Arena Rex to show you such as the end of the SbS of Lupa, or animals in progres..., but for now, I will focus my attention on a complete different project that has been planned a long time ago and was actually finished at the end of this summer.

The Toad.

You may know that I already worked on several projects for Infamy Miniatures, though I haven't posted complete articles about them on my blog. Yet.
Projects called Sherlock Holmes, John Watson, Frank Hyde...
Powerful and inspiring names !

So, when James from Infamy Minitures contacted me about The Toad and described what he had in mind, I felt trully motivated and already my mind was at work !
He showed me the art from Martin McKenna and provided several very complex and detailed descriptions and thoughts...

The Toad.

The Toad - Illustration by M. McKenna

James specified he actually liked a lot this art and wished the model to stay pretty close of it, though the illustration was not a proper concept art and then needed lot of adjustments, interpretations... And was missing the whole back...
The machinery was in my mind as important as the character himself, and could either make the model really great, either ruin it !

So, I had to make my own researches through internet, illustrations, movies and books... Trying some sketches, imagining mechanisms and volumes that would fit original illustration and descriptions, and yet appears as "realistic"... Well, as realistic as it could be anyway !

Since I knew for production purpose and safety/strongness of the final model (that has to be designed for gaming !) that tiny details could not coming out from the big cube of metal on his back, Chimney then would take more importance as visual and esthetic design element.

So, I designed before to start the proper sculpture several types of Chimney that would fit both the size and style of our steampunk Toad.
The final design is a kind of mix of several of them...

As I wrote, since I did not have a proper and accurate design for the mechanism, though the descriptive texts in my possession, I did start to sketch some ideas.
Here are some examples I did use as base of reflexion for the next steps...

Some sketches were made as well concerning the big steam engine, but nothing really useful.
More oriented shapes and volumes than proper and detailed designs...
Actually they helped me to know what not to go for !

At this point, James provided some montage for me to understand what I could do and look for.
Though I could not use it as base for the design of the metal Beast that would activate the whole monster, it helped me to understand what could be expected.

I did finally "design" the whole mechanisms and steam engine on the volume itself !
It took me lot of time of course, looking for something I did not know what it was like yet, making lot of mistakes or going back and forth, being satysfied of a part to change my mind the day after...
I would not advise to go for this kind of method because it is very frustrating, slow and nervously very complicated ! Lot and lot of time lost.

⎯

While working on it, it was time to consider his Hammer.
The design from the illustration was pretty nice, though deserving to be adjusted considering the description I had and the technical necessities due to production process.
It is clearly an important piece of the look, specially from the front of the model, and it is the one that would inspire fear to his enemies.
It needed then to be very powerful and intimidating.
I focused on the "handle" part because I really like the head.
In the game, the Hammer is electrified and of course causes big damages as a big... Hammer.
Got this idea to use its volume to add the possibility of an hydraulic ram — James liked this idea —and then I designed the handle part that I had in mind...

Keeping the head from the illustration, adding this handle with only the electric cable needing to be modified for casting issue, and I got myself the Hammer final design !

I am gonna try to find the time to write a SbS article about The Toad later with WIP pics of the different elements, but now is time to show you the final result !
